Took me a while but I finally decided to make my essay topic on views.  I have nothing more to add. =)

”Who are you?”  A favourable quote stated by my present math teacher.  He always says this when ever he wants to motivate us to study harder for the next test, but there’s a lot more meaning behind it once you put it into another situation.  I’m talking about YOUR identity.  Well, I suppose it’s not exactly your identity, but more like what kind of personality you have on the internet.  You could be an extremely shy and quiet person like me but have a personality that is totally different on the net.  Places included social networks such as Facebook, Myspace, Hi5, and Orkut.  These are virtual worlds were we can build a new life and create communities with people that share the “same” interests as you. I suppose you’re wondering why “same” is in quotation marks.  Well, sometimes the things you say that you like and dislike on the net, may not be entirely true; many people say little white lies in order to fit in to a group.  ”I mean, nobody’s actually going to meet me one day, so I might as well create a new identity that everybody likes.”  I just made up that quote (lol), but you get what I mean.  People just want a life and so they create a virtual one that everybody would like.

However, many people create false identities to get friends in real life, some actually don’t like the idea.  I read this article just a couple of minutes ago (I’m being marked on this lol), where two girls who are fond of using the social network Orkut dislike the idea of combining their personal life with their net life.  One girl from the article had a very good guy friend on Orkut. She was able to open up to him and everything and she really wanted to meet him in person.  However, things didn’t turn out as well as she hoped it would, the guy seemed to have a completely opposite personality as opposed his Orkut personality.

Okay, so now about Greg Bukata.  A guy that looks as if he’s the fun type and enjoys taking and posting pictures of himself turns out to be slightly the opposite. Greg has the ambition of getting into the military and in order to do so, he has to make sure that the instructors there don’t get a hold of any inappropriate picture/videos of himself.

”In this world, the person is not bound by any restriction of society, religion or family. He is all by himself and it is this very feeling that elevates him. He is with a group of people whom he likes, not with whom he is forced to be. He is free to do and say anything on the net, as there is no one to keep a check on him. And this gives way to one’s ‘net life’ or cyber identity, in technical terms.” – a passage from merinews.com
